Farage should never ever be near Downing Street. He is dangerous to the country.

Chris P's avatar

Congrats on the nomination. You deserve it!

I am one of those EU settled immigrants apparently excluded but I am just as scared. Even if I’m on the bottom of the list, I am on the list. If the policy doesn’t improve the economy, will they conclude that they were wrong or that they didn’t go far enough?

Please make sure you apply for citizenship so that you can vote in the 2029 elections. This is serious and the election result will affect everyone.

Lesley's avatar

I'm pretty sure you will always be able to stay. However, If you want to stay here, and you are worried, why haven’t you applied for British citizenship, instead of hanging on to your EU passport?

There are better things to spend money on, like Substack, but push comes to shove

Re: Silvertown tunnel bike bus

It was clear from the start that not providing a safe route for people to cycle through the tunnel would massively restrict the number of cycle crossings made. Yet the optics of completely banning cyclists from a brand new tunnel wouldn't have been politically acceptable, so instead there's an inconvenient bus that nobody wants to take.

TfL would have been aware of this - after all, a popular reason for cycling is to _avoid_ buses - but with funding for the bus only guaranteed for a fixed period they can later withdraw the buses citing high costs and lack of demand. By this point some time will have passed and most people won't even notice.

Should help the housing market 👍👍

worksheet's avatar

I have been short the housing market for the past 2 years because this seemed inevitable to me.

And by short the housing market I mean continuously renting lol

Risingson's avatar

Can you tell me where you live so we immigrants get all the housing around you and probably yours as well? And your job position as well?

The Reform policy is aimed at their voters and similar-minded simpletons who like performance of racism but not the effects on their own lives. I suspect there's a large and growing number of such folk in fhe UK. Reform has to attract their votes to gain power. This is one of the pernicious results of constant exposure to GBN and TikTok shorts.

Your racist insult has lost its meaning. Ask the indigenous population of Tower Hamlets or many other boroughs how the new foreign communities benefited them and the country. Really when you see that so few - as a percentage - migrants actually work in the NHS then no other argument can trump the stats on crime, benefits and integration.

John Webb's avatar

Racist insult indeed? Unless a race of simpletons exist I have no idea what you're trying to get across. Take it nice and slowly, thinking can be slippery.

Risingson's avatar

Racist insult? Who are the "indigenous population" and who the "new foreign communities"? Few migrants work in the NHS?

Wow... Did I read correctly that the £50m house only has a Council Tax bill of £4.5k pa... WTF.

I'll get myself mad about the Farage stuff later... such a weird world we live in but surely he is prohibited from even being PM by dint of his German Passport?

Revoking ILR is not deportation. If people want to stay in Britain they can apply for a visa.

Sarah's avatar

The salary threshold means the majority of people who live in the UK will not be able to meet the requirement for the visa. This includes NHS staff, university staff, etc. I earn about 40k, have never been on benefits, etc and wouldn't qualify for the proposed new visa requirements.

There's no clarity on how it would impact people who are marriage visas (married to a British Citizen) rather than on work visas. Presumably, folks on a marriage visa would be transitioned to a work visa? Or have a salary requirement? There is already an income requirement for marriage visas, it's just not 60k.

Implementing Reforms plan would effectively lead to the deportation of a high portion of migrants because the earn around the average UK salary. And while this would have a huge impact on London, it would also have a large impact on areas such as the north of England where salaries are lower.

Keep in mind that to get ILR you have to go through several short term visas, pay the NHS surcharge several times, and go through a period of 5-10 years without access to public funds. There is a lot of barriers to ensure migrants don't get support from the state - removing ILR is just cruel and vindictive for no real-work gain.

Iona's avatar

But who would want that uncertainty and cost? If you have children in school why would you risk having to move them on and damage their education. Whilst a 5 year visa would suit some people, for the majority they want stability. I can see this being a huge benefit for other countries. It is, of course, important we attract the those who work in high income roles but we also heavily rely on people who work in low paid roles such as social care, providing home care to elderly and those with disabilities, in hospitals, in hospitality etc.

Zysk's avatar

Do you reckon the visa’s gonna be cheap considering the salary requirements? And given non-UK citizens are to lose access to welfare, will we need to start paying for the NHS as well? Basically just squeezing a section of society for all it’s worth out of spite.

Need to check the demographics - most residents are postwar immigrants - most are not economically active - ironic that around our main wealth generating city of London with its separate mayor is a stranglehold of net non contributors lead by a Anti white anti city Muslim leader.

Risingson's avatar

"Anti white" is one of the biggest bullshits I have ever read here.

Having been through the Silvertown tunnel in a car, its enormous and has two well spaced lanes (one of which is a bus lane). I've not been through at peak times, but it was not busy at all.

I don't see why they can't just let cyclists cycle through it? You're *allowed* to cycle through the Rotherhithe tunnel (it wouldn't be advisable given the pollution but its allowed), the Silvertown tunnel would be a much safer and more pleasant experience than that

You can’t tease us with this, and then not spill the beans!

> As ever with London, if you work out who owns the property you find an interesting story.

If I wanted to get my news from the SubStandard, I wouldn’t be subscribed to London Centric 😉

That story refers to a different house, in South Ken, though. I guess he was so distraught at losing his £6m house to his kids, he bought a £50m one instead?

As someone who recalls Powell's Rivers Of Blood speech and the subsequent marches by tens of thousands of 'salt of the earth' trade unionist supporting him I am heartbroken at the current way immigration is discussed. There are now Labour Ministers who Heath would probably have sacked for some of their remarks. As for the Tories there is not a single Shadow Cabinet 'Minister' Heath would have not booted out. As for the reptilian Farage he has already been a disaster for this country. But much as I detest him, and Reform, there is one policy they have that is entirely supportable, npot taxing anyone until they earn £20,000. We have a vast, cumbersome, cruel, bureaucracy whose sole purpose is to dispense 'in-work' benefits to 2 MILLION full-time workers and 2 MILLION P/T workers classed as in poverty. That is insane. Reform is getting support because millions are working hard and receiving almost nothing in return. How many potential Reform voters know Farage has already said he favours a private inurance health system? Not many I'll wager. Unfortunately we have the Starmer government which must be not only the most inept of recent times (you can't count Truss) and doesn't have single politician who speaks 'human' in the Cabinet. I have never been in so much despair.

This is insane. Anyone that agrees with this isn't okay upstairs. Do you know how many of your doctors and engineers are migrants?? Cliché, but this is serious. Now however I feel this whole uproar is due more to islam, if colour is involved then it's stupid, as there are white migrants. Yes white migrants.
